'Here is a quick selection of some of my favorite things from Pitti Bimbo 79. I am still editing but certain themes for kids fashion stood out strongly. One of the surprises was the new Fendi collection, an expansion on the Monster theme of the winter with some really beautiful dresses as well, quirky and well designed. Also a big well done to designer Alessandro Enriquez, the multi-talented designer of An Italian Theory (he has a cookbook out and is a journalist too) for organising a selection of adult collection designers to try their hands at kids fashion design for the first time under the Kid’s Evolution stand with some stunning results. New trends seen include a return to full/midi length dresses and skirts, even more decoration/sequins/badges/applique added to garments. Cartoon style illustration with a Disney vibe and the favourite animal theme going a bit fishy, so appropriate for the summer months. Songbirds appeared as prints and embroidery, colours were on the whole still vivid and strong with greens, reds, neon pink, neon yellow and cerulean blue the favourites. Other prints kept to a retro vibe with either 1950’s or 60’s inspiration and while still around monochrome was a lesser trend this time. Lace was everywhere from pretty retro dresses to decorating the sleeves of tough denim or leather jackets and rainbow stripes as well as the ever popular beach nauticals were used on the espadrille which was one of the top shoe choices of the season. Shoes in general were striking, a really strong season for footwear from trainers with mixed metallic, camouflage and neon panels to crystal embellished sandals. Top catwalk award goes to Il Gufo who incorporated a fish tank of goldfish down the middle of the runway!'
